Oxy-fired fluidized bed combustors with a flexible power output using circulating solids for thermal energy storage

This paper presents a power plant concept based on an oxy-fired circulating fluidized bed combustor (oxy-CFBC) combined with thermal energy storage on a large scale. The concept exploits to full advantage the large circulation flows of high temperature solids that are characteristic of these systems. Two solid storage silos (one for high temperature and the other for low temperature solids) connected to the oxy-fired CFBC allow variability in power output without the need to modify the fuel firing rate and/or the mass flow of O2 to the combustor. During the periods of high power demand the system can deliver additional thermal power by extracting heat from a series of fluidized bed heat exchangers fed with solids from the high temperature silo. Likewise, during period of low power demand, the thermal power output can be reduced by using the energy released in the combustor to heat up the low temperature solids on their way from the low temperature silo to the oxy-CFBC and storing them in the high temperature silo located below the cyclone. A preliminary economic analysis of two designs indicates that this highly flexible system could make this type of power plant more competitive in the electricity markets where fossil fuels with CCS will be required to respond to a large variability in power output.Y.A. [EN] Little research has been done on the land-sea exchange of trace elements, which is particularly applicable to ria coasts. In particular, trace metal enrichment in the inner part of the Ria of Vigo (the San Simon Inlet) has been observed from sediment studies but there is no information about Cd, Pb and Zn fluxes through the Rande Strait, which is the natural boundary of the estuary-ria water exchange. In order to assess metal exchanges in a ria-type system, six sampling cruises on board the R/V Mytilus (IIM-CSIC) were carried out. Water column profiles of salinity, temperature and tidal currents were obtained every 30 min. The water column for dissolved and particulate metals was sampled every two hours over a complete tidal cycle. Dissolved metal concentrations were 0.01–0.18 nM for Cd, 0.5-1.9 nM for Pb and 4-44 nM for Zn. Compared with Zn (16±12%) and especially with Cd (5.4±5.0%), particulate metal represented a significant fraction of the total concentration for Pb (41±21%). Net fluxes of dissolved Cd and Zn are higher than in the particulate phase, whereas for Pb an inverse situation was observed. The net metal exchange in the Vigo estuary-ria environment was not seasonally controlled. Dissolved Cd and Pb were driven by tidal ranges and particulate Pb by the Oitavén River flow. On the other hand, Zn did not show a defined trend. The budgets obtained for the Ria of Vigo, with the exception of Pb, were one or two orders of magnitude lower than those measured in other large European estuaries[ES] Intercambio estuario-ría de elementos traza en el sistema costero de la ría de Vigo (NO península Ibérica). Peer reviewe

CrimeNet: Neural Structured Learning using Vision Transformer for violence detection

    Get PDF
The state of the art in violence detection in videos has improved in recent years thanks to deep learning models, but it is still below 90% of average precision in the most complex datasets, which may pose a problem of frequent false alarms in video surveillance environments and may cause security guards to disable the artificial intelligence system. In this study, we propose a new neural network based on Vision Transformer (ViT) and Neural Structured Learning (NSL) with adversarial training. This network, called CrimeNet, outperforms previous works by a large margin and reduces practically to zero the false positives. Our tests on the four most challenging violence-related datasets (binary and multi-class) show the effectiveness of CrimeNet, improving the state of the art from 9.4 to 22.17 percentage points in ROC AUC depending on the dataset. In addition, we present a generalisation study on our model by training and testing it on different datasets. The obtained results show that CrimeNet improves over competing methods with a gain of between 12.39 and 25.22 percentage points, showing remarkable robustness.MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by the “European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR ” HORUS project - Grant n. Failure under stress of grapevine wood: The effects of the cerambycid xylotrechus arvicola on the biomechanics properties of vitis vinifera

    Get PDF
Xylotrechus arvicola is an insect pest on Vitis vinifera in the main wine-producing regions of Spain. X. arvicola larvae bore inside grapevine wood, which cause structural damages in the plants´ biomechanical properties. Grapevine wood affected and unaffected by larvae, were collected from vineyards. Compression and flexural tests were used to quantify biomechanical wood properties. Affected wood broke more quickly and endured a lower supported force than unaffected wood in both varieties and moisture states. Tempranillo was the most resistant variety on trunks, while Cabernet-Sauvignon was the most resistant variety on branches, where all infested varieties showed a lower rate of bending. Grapevine wood affected by X. arvicola larvae shows an important decrease in its resistance in both moisture states - dry and wet wood - and it is observed due to the faster break in time and a lower supported force. These damages give the affected wood greater sensitivity to external mechanical factors in the vineyards, such as strong winds, harvest weight and the vibration exerted by harvesting machines. The aspect of stress-time curves in all cases follow similar patterns, so in future studies might be possible to stablish relationships between both wet and dry samples and different infestation levels

Modeling of energy efficiency for residential buildings using artificial neuronal networks

The energy efficiency dataset used to support the findings of this study has been deposited in the GitHub repository https://github.com/mereshow/ann-energy-efficiency.git.[Abstract] Increasing the energy efficiency of buildings is a strategic objective in the European Union, and it is the main reason why numerous studies have been carried out to evaluate and reduce energy consumption in the residential sector. The process of evaluation and qualification of the energy efficiency in existing buildings should contain an analysis of the thermal behavior of the building envelope. To determine this thermal behavior and its representative parameters, we usually have to use destructive auscultation techniques in order to determine the composition of the different layers of the envelope. In this work, we present a nondestructive, fast, and cheap technique based on artificial neural network (ANN) models that predict the energy performance of a house, given some of its characteristics. The models were created using a dataset of buildings of different typologies and uses, located in the northern area of Spain. In this dataset, the models are able to predict the U-opaque value of a building with a correlation coefficient of 0.967 with the real U-opaque measured value for the same building

Handgun detection using combined human pose and weapon appearance

    Get PDF
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are essential nowadays to prevent security threats or dangerous situations, in which early detection is crucial. Novel deep learning-based methods have allowed to develop automatic weapon detectors with promising results. However, these approaches are mainly based on visual weapon appearance only. For handguns, body pose may be a useful cue, especially in cases where the gun is barely visible. In this work, a novel method is proposed to combine, in a single architecture, both weapon appearance and human pose information. First, pose keypoints are estimated to extract hand regions and generate binary pose images, which are the model inputs. Then, each input is processed in different subnetworks and combined to produce the handgun bounding box. Results obtained show that the combined model improves the handgun detection state of the art, achieving from 4.23 to 18.9 AP points more than the best previous approach.Comment: 17 pages, 18 figure

TiO2:Cex onto Al Clays for Photocatalytic Solar Water Disinfection

    Get PDF
A novel methodology was employed to prepare new nanocomposites with photocatalytic properties based on Ce-doped TiO2 nanoparticles arranged over a layered silicate. The catalysts were porous materials formed by exfoliated silicate layers surrounded by anatase nanoparticles. In this way, the anatase was doped by different amounts of Ce, yielding to catalysts with light absorption properties on the visible region. The photocatalytic behavior was tested for different reactions: adsorption and photocatalysis, showing outstanding and promising results for the removal of bacteria by using solar light as an energy source. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the catalyst and the reaction parameters will be studied in detail to manage new catalysts for the disinfection of drinking water
